Swifts Committee Members 2025
Miranda Bates
RR10 and CC6 Women's Captain
Running age: About 3 years, I was naively persuaded to run an RR10 and thrown in at the deep end, having never experienced anything like it. Fortunately, I’m now hooked and the bonus is being part of a club I love.
Favourite running event: Endure24 has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done, a brilliant testament to mind over matter. Running through the night with team mates, fuelled by Haribo, banter, and laughs it's an experience like no other.
Biggest running achievement: Ongoing fitness gains are something I never take for granted. I’m aware how fortunate I am to be healthy enough to run, but the Kew Gardens Half was a standout moment.
Outside of running: When I’m not organising trains and vehicle fleets to be wrapped in graphics, I’m at home with my husband and two young daughters, who keep life full of fun, love, and warmth.

RR10 and CC6 Men's Captain
LIRF, Men’s RR10/CC6 captain and Community Coordinator.
Running age: Running off and on since my teens but more seriously in the past 8years since (originally triathlons)
Favourite race distance: 10km to 10mile. Not too long that it gets boring but short enough to put some speed down!
Favourite running event: A muddy trail 10mile Canicross! My regular event that fits this description is the GutBuster in Reading on 31st December each year.
Biggest running achievement: Endure24, London marathon in 2023 and Barcelona Marathon 2025 were amazing. I also completed my first 70.3 triathlon in 2019 and the half marathon was exceptionally tough but immensely rewarding.
Outside of running: I have a young daughter called Alba, a fur baby called Monty and an awesome firefighting partner called Lisa! I work for a popular coffee brand and love nothing more than chilling in a coffee shop with Alba and/or a book. I also love brunch.
Phil Wiseman
Events Coordinator
Coaching Coordinator and Events and Competitions Officers, CiRF and Event Director for our annual Tour of the Woods 10K trail run.
Running age: I had a semi-regular 5k loop with my dad throughout my teenage years but started running seriously after joining Chandler’s Ford Community Running Group in 2018.
Favourite race distance: Marathon and more. They’re the best value for money! I live for the long slow trail runs with just me, birdsong, and a cooling summer breeze.
Favourite Running Event: I used to love Lulworth Cove trail events by the Trail Events Co but they sadly ceased trading recently. I’m a massive fan of Big Feat events, having run their Big Pilgrimage marathon twice.
Biggest Running Achievement: Running 7 marathons in 7 days for the MS Society in 2024
Favourite running quote: "Run if you can, walk if you can't, crawl if you must"
Outside of running: I'm an astrophysics researcher at the University of Southampton looking at exploding stars and black holes. I love my wife Em, dog Freddie, and cat Finn, and even when not running I try to spend as much time outdoors with them as possible.

I’ve been keen since school cross-country, but it was an advert for a Run England (as was) introductory course in 2010 that got me back to running regularly. I was so proud to represent Swifts at the 2023 London Marathon after being lucky enough to be drawn in the club ballot. As time has gone on, I’ve become more attracted to longer distances and particularly trail running. I still love a 10k but the draw of an Ultra is hard to resist…. The event I’m most proud of was representing Swifts at the 2023 London Marathon after being lucky enough to be drawn in the club ballot.
Outside running, I work part-time at Up & Running Southampton (i.e. Chandlers Ford), following a previous life as an economic geography academic. I’m a fan of MotoGP racing and of wartime Utility furniture. The latter led to an appearance in the historical segment of Inside the Factory: Chairs (2022).

Running age: up until my early 30’s I played mainly team sports such as football and cricket. I started running more during COVID and have stuck with it.
Favourite race distance: Tricky question but I’d probably say somewhere either 5miles or 10k. Although I have enjoyed half marathons when training has gone to plan!
Favourite running event: I think it has to be Forest Filth. A swifts event put on by Steve in the winter and it is always such a laugh and the miles fly by. You start questioning life decisions when you’re wading waist height in water, but you can’t wait for the next one. Also who doesn’t like savoury snacks, cakeand tea afterwards?!
Biggest running achievement: Endure24 in 2023 was awesome and completing 6 x 5 mile was a shock to me. Also my only marathon attempt, whilst the race didn’t go to plan, I got it done and would definitely like to tick off another in the near future.
Outside of running: I have a wonderful wife, 3 daughters ranging from 0-6 years and an aging dog! I still play the odd game of cricket but footballing days and long gone. Music is a key interest of mine and I’ll try and get to some gigs when there is time!

Running age: after a successful cross county season at age 11, I didn’t run again until my early 20s. I couldn’t get round the 1.5 mile military fitness test at all, never mind in the required time, so cut down on the fags and picked up the miles!
Favorite race distance: I love the 7k ish that you get on the RR10 league runs. Less pressure than a 5k, and I can’t often fit training for anything longer into my weeks at the moment.
Favorite running event: I’ve not done many, so I’ll take the opportunity to big up the RR10 and CC6 league races. Great atmosphere, great camaraderie, lovely routes and excellent cake.
Biggest running achievement: Running through three pregnancies felt like an achievement. Less the physical side; more the trust in my body when so many people gave me funny looks/ told me it was a bad idea!
Favourite running quote: A good run is like a cup of coffee. I'm much nicer after I've had one.
Outside of running: I've got three small children, a long suffering husband, and I work as a solicitor specialising in banking & finance.
